Extrusion processing, a widely used food and feed processing technology, uses a set of screws (or a single screw) to push food materials through small openings, which is then cooked at a high temperature and pressure and encased in a barrel. While both single screw and twin-screw extruders are used in the food industry, twin-screw extruders offer better control, flexibility, and accuracy.
Extrusion is one of the most energy efficient cooking processes. It is environmentally friendly with no waste streams. It is also ideally suited for processing of agricultural waste and by-products.
Advantages of twin-screw extrusion
“For decades, the number of hungry people had been declining. This isn’t true anymore.”
Versatile
Can process viscous, oily, sticky or very wet material
Economic
Less wear in smaller part of the extruder than Single-screw extruders
